Bitcoin versus Crypto: What’s the Difference?
Bitcoin is the first and most decentralized cryptocurrency. Think of it as digital gold. Just like gold is valuable because it is rare. Bitcoin is valuable because it has a limited supply. It is a way to store and send money without needing banks or middlemen. Bitcoin runs on a blockchain, which is a secure, digital ledger that keeps track of all transactions. This ledger is shared across thousands of computers worldwide, making it nearly impossible for anyone to control it.
When people say “crypto,” they usually mean all the other cryptocurrencies, named altcoins. These come in all shapes and sizes — some try to improve Bitcoin’s technology, others focus on smart contracts (which are like digital agreements), privacy features, or new financial tools. Altcoins have different rules and are mostly not decentralized. By keeping Bitcoin separate from other cryptos, it is easier to see why bitcoin is so special and why it is called the “digital gold.” Bitcoin and all the other cryptos are an exciting mix for traders.
